DETROIT GUITARIST CHARGED WITH PARKING ON HIS OWN DRIVEWAY

HARPER WOODS MAN CHARGED WITH PARKING ON HIS OWN DRIVEWAY

Harper Woods, Michigan- A lifelong citizen of this tiny suburb of 10,000 woke up Wednesday to find a notice in his mail box. It was a warrant for his arrest issued by Judge Roger J. La Rose. the city's district court judge. The crime? Parking his own Dodge minivan on his own driveway. The warrant listed it as a "junk vehicle" in spite of the fact that the owner, Scott Campbell, already produced copies of his valid license plate, registration and insurance, something the local police department could have found out just by running his plate. "I was told by the city attorney that this was settled, though they should have simply run the plate to begin with".

This isn't the first time this has happened, but it is the first time the city attorney has carried things to the point of issuing a bench warrant. Campbell stated that the cause of all this is his next door neighbor, who has threatened to have the judge unseated if Campbell isn't evicted from his home of 15 years and the house torn down.

The same neighbor, Carl Moore, repeatedly threatened to have the city building inspector Gerrard Owczarzak fired from his job if he didn't follow Moore's orders. "When I bought the house, the woman next door told me that all these houses were too close together and every other one should be torn down.

They drove the old woman who lived here for 35 years into a nursing home. Five families on the other side of them have moved in and out again over the past few years. Neighbors have told me they will hide in their houses just to avoid talking to Carl. I went out of my way to be nice to them, but there's no pleasing them."

Campbell will be araigned Monday morning at District Court 32-A, where his mother used to work. "She worked for the city over 20 years and has lived here over 60 years. She can't believe this is happening".
Harper Woods is the city that threw a 70 year old woman in jail for her garden, in spite of the fact that she cut it back to meet the building inspector's demands. Campbell first came to to the city council's attention when he suggested several years ago that the residents be allowed to vote on keeping the name "Harper Woods" or changing it to "Grosse Pointe Heights", a name suggested by the 1950 steering commitee before a name was chosen.

"Those people looked and acted like I had threatened to kill them. I was shocked at their anger. It was weird. I got threatening phone calls after that in the middle of the night. A number of people told me they like the idea including a couple of city officials, but this city is dangerous enough without getting the mayor and the entire city council going after you."

Go to a mechanic and get a safety inspection. Have them check all lights, the horn, turn signals, brakes, fuel system for leaks and the muffler. It should cost between $20 and $40. If all these items are functional and it's regestered they have no case. A second write up within 6 months would be grounds for a harassment suit after you supplied this information to the court.

It reads like some one around the area had it in for him and set out to ruin him in any way possible.

At least it's better than the time the Harper Woods cops surrounded my house and started beating on all the doors and windows while I was still asleep!

Sounds to me like this guy has some type of vendetta held by the police department against him or that a neighbor is involved.

Neighbor from hell and a city attorney then should know better.

what is considered a junk vehicle? if it means rust and dents, most cars fit that criteria, so all can be ticketed? the city must be desperate for money

The laws in some part of this so called free country are for the birds. Who allows these laws in the first place? A murder, thief, drug push can run all around but let a person park a car or truck where its visible by there neighbor or like the guy in Detroit doesn't meet the standard he can get arrested. But yet the president doesn't have to produce a birth certificate for the american public to see this is okay. I guess its Free because I'm not getting arrested for posting this at least not just yet

What is your source for this post?

I find it lacking in detail.

The woman mentioned did not have a "garden" but unsightly overgrown landscaping.

There must be wayyyy more to this than you are reporting here.

"doesn't seem right, maybe the cop had a quota of tickets to write"

@anon The source of the story is Detroit guitarist Scott Campbell. He has plenty of detail to share and I heard he'll be on the local news tv channels soon.

Retro,

You say this person has "plenty of detail" but you share none of it here?

You have many here railing against the city with absolutely no real info on the case itself or background to back it up.

I mention no real background as you clearly did not do your homework on the womans 'landscaping' issue.

It is my belief this 'guitarist' you know personally and therefore have a buit-in bias towards his side of the story, but when I hear something like this I wish to get both sides so as to have the complete story and make up my own mind.

The story on it's face does seem outrageous which is why if true ther must be alot more to it.

My advise to your readers is to hold their fire until ALL available info is reported.

I don't find this hard to believe at all. I had the same issue with my hearse in Royal Oak. This car was not pretty and annoyed neighbors. Suddenly it was deemed a commercial vehicle, despite the fact it was my daily driver. If I did not move it around every night they would chalk the tires and put stickers on the windshield. If I was not in town i had to have it moved each night. It was totally safe and mechanically sound, plated and insured. I finally left town--they won.

Yes Rick neighbors can be a huge pain!!! But Scott has them on the run!
