SEASON 2 BETTER THAN 1: TRUE BLOOD

Season 2 looks like an improvement over the first one.

By ROBERT LLOYD, Television Critic
June 13, 2009

HBO's vampire dramedy “ True Blood” returns Sunday night for a second season of gore and guts and breasts and buttocks. The action may take place in the South, but the show itself is truly set in a place called Premium Cable.

Creator Alan Ball ("Six Feet Under") continues his more or less faithful, though highly elaborated and extended, adaptations of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novelsCharlaine Harris’, which tell the story of a telepathic waitress, her undead beau and various other libidinous friends and monsters in the Louisiana swamp town of Bon Temps. (Cajun French for "Sunnydale," in a way.) The special conceit here, which is a good one, is that the recent invention of synthetic blood -- marketed as a kind of nonalcoholic beer for the blood-addicted, in one of the many metaphors that flit around this tale -- has allowed vampires to "come out of the coffin" and join mainstream society.

Just as the first season covered the territory of the first Sookie book, "Dead by Dark," the second follows the lines of its sequel, "Living Dead in Dallas," though with even more additions and alterations. Whereas Harris' novels are all written from Sookie's point of view, the series spreads its attention among several characters, and the material has been twisted and inflated to feature them. There are a lot of characters, and they need things to do.

We are having fang withdrawals already! OMG did you guys see the final episode Sunday night????
What a show! Held my breath through the whole thing! HBO is starting production on season 2 and will air in the Summer of 2009 YAY!

It was so unexpected that I would like True Blood. Twisted stuff has always appealed to me but not horror stuff. This was more twisted than horror filled. It was darn close to XXX rated in some scenes. All of the actors were so good.

Wasn't Steven Moyer awesome as Bill Compton? He made it possible to fall in love with a Vamp didn't he? Anna Paquin was really great too. Together those two really took you into that weird world. Didn't you just love the way he said Sukkie instead of Sookie? LOL

The theme song by Jace Everett hooked me from the first episode. It made me feel somehow safe and comforted before the show came on. See more on Jace HERE

I kept waiting for some really bad thing to happen between Tara and her mother. I bet they take that line further next season.

Any way THANK YOU HBO! After the close of The Sopranos/OZ/Six Feet Under/Sex and the City/I thought I'd never be excited on Sunday nights again! Rumor has it they are really pumping up some new series soon to rival those great shows in the past.

SNARKYLIOUS VAMPIRE WOMEN!

Cassandra Peterson, ELVIRA!

Cassandra Peterson, Elvira's alter ego, was born in Manhattan, Kansas, and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She remembers always being a fan of Ann-Margret. Since Cassandra saw her in Viva Las Vegas (1964), she wanted to be a dancer. Just days after graduating from high school, Cassandra traveled to Las Vegas where, at the age of 17, she became the youngest showgirl in Las Vegas history.

Film and television appearances such as Cheech & Chong's Next Movie (1980) and others followed, but Cassandra was just the typical struggling actress and spent years wondering where her next meal was coming from. It was the fall of 1981, with the birth of her character, Elvira, that it all changed. While she has since played herself in many film and television shows, Cassandra Peterson ultimately combines her numerous talents into an intriguing persona which has not only become a Halloween icon, but a "vamp" for all seasons.

Elsa Lancaster Bride of Frankenstein
Elsa Lanchester was born in Lewisham, London, England. Her parents, James Sullivan and Edith Lanchester, were considered Bohemian, and refused to legalize their union in any conventional way to satisfy the era's conservative society. Edith's parents even successfully sent her to an asylum for a while, as she refused to wed James even if she wanted to live with him. An older brother, Waldo (b. 1898), completed the family.

As a child, Elsa studied dance in Paris under Isadora Duncan, whom she disliked. When the school was discontinued due to the start of First World War she returned to England. At that point (she was about twelve years of age) she considered herself capable to teach dancing in the Isadora Duncan style (despite her own scathing remarks about her former teacher's style) and, very enterprisingly, started to give classes to children of her South London neighborhood, with which she earned a welcome bit of extra income in her household.

Vampira
The original glamour ghoul herself, "Vampira," of late night 50s TV, was actually born Maila Syrjäniemi (later changed to the easier surname Nurmi) on December 11, 1921, in Petsamo, Finland.

Her uncle was the multiple Olympic medal runner Paavo Nurmi. Maila arrived in the United States with her family as a baby and lived a rather nomadic existence at first as her father was a writer who lectured on temperance.

 Morticia Adams

The Addams Family was a big hit and Carolyn Jones received all the fame she had craved. However, the network decided to cancel the show, despite its success, after only two years.

Typecast as Morticia but without the income that a few more years would have provided, she found life difficult and roles few. While acting on the road, she married her voice coach, Herbert S. Greene, a man who was not much liked in the industry, and he persuaded her to retire to Palm Springs, California, where she lost contact with many friends.

Yvonne De Carlo Lilly Munster

Her most famous role that led her to pop culture legacy is of Lily Munster in the cult television series The Munsters (1964-1966), which allowed De Carlo to demonstrate a comic flair that her films had failed to utilize. She also played Lily in the 1966 feature film Munster, Go Home and the 1981 TV movie The Munsters' Revenge.

Fabulously gorgeous Brad as Louis de Pointe du Lac

See Louis Here
watch Armand and Louis Here

It was one of these nights, in a tavern brawl, that he caught the eye of the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt, who fell "fatally in love" with the tragic Creole planter, appeared to him as an angel and offered him an alternative to his desperate, meaningless life. Lestat, upon seeing for the first time Louis' "wavy black hair" and deep green eyes, and sensing his passion, was completely and immediately seduced not only by Louis's beauty, but also by his tragedy and human heart; "He seduced the tenderness in me." Lestat made Louis into a vampire, his immortal companion in 1791, and it was Louis with whom he would live, love, and kill for nearly a century to come.

Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt

"Lestat, ever the maverick and laughing trickster. Six feet tall, a young man of twenty when made, with huge warm blue eyes and thick flashy blond hair, square of jaw, with a generous beautifully shaped mouth and skin darkened by a sojourn in the sun which would have killed a weaker vampire, a ladies' man, an Oscar Wildean fantasy, the glass of fashion, the most bold and disregarding dust vagabond on occasion, loner, wanderer, heartbreaker and wise guy, dubbed the 'Brat Prince'..."
